Just Imagine…A Dream Come True
Well – it is with both a joy-filled and a heavy heart that I am writing to let everybody know that I will be leaving the Maine Development Foundation. After 7.5 of the most rewarding years imaginable, I am departing for the only opportunity that I would have ever left the Foundation for – a chance to work in higher education. As of July 1, I will become the President of Thomas College.
In ways it seems almost unimaginable that I have been given this opportunity, and yet in other ways it feels like a completely natural extension of the work I’ve been doing for so many years.
For any who know me, you know how much I love Maine. For my entire work life, I have been blessed to be able to analyze, forecast, write and speak about Maine’s economy. As Central Maine Power Company’s Corporate Economist, I observed the economy and projected how it would affect CMP’s sales and revenues. As the Maine State Economist, I helped shape policies that influenced overall economic conditions. And as the President of the Maine Development Foundation, my work has helped to inform leaders in all sectors of our economy, strengthen communities across all regions, and guide economic policy development.
And while I have absolutely loved each and every job, I now have the chance to fulfill my lifelong dream of more directly making a meaningful difference in the lives of Maine’s people – working in education. Over nearly 3 decades of analyzing economic development, I have grown to understand that the most critically important investment that we can make to ensure economic prosperity is education, and the only way we will attain our vision of “A High Quality of Life for all Maine People” is to help lift every Maine person to their highest potential.
For over 100 years, Thomas College has fulfilled the hopes and dreams of thousands of students and their families, instilling pride, an unparalleled work ethic and can-do attitude that are the very essence of Maine and providing opportunity for students to succeed in their professional, civic and personal lives. It is truly an honor and a blessing to be able to lead this critically important institution in the heart of Maine.
The Maine Development Foundation is, perhaps, the strongest it has been in its 34 year history. The Board is engaged and laser-focused on our strategic initiatives – investing in the education, health and innovative capacity of our people, and attracting and engaging new populations. The staff is highly professional, greatly skilled and tremendously passionate. And the organization is dynamic and growing with a wide array of rich partnerships. I am enormously proud of the work of MDF and the integrity, passion and optimism of the board, staff and all of the people with whom we work.
With a deep love of, commitment to and passion for Maine and Maine’s people, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done to strengthen and guide me, and I humbly ask you to join me as I begin the most important work of my life.
With my love, thanks and deepest respect,
