In
2003, a group of nine women pooled their personal resources and purchased the Mincton building in downtown Eastport. The original
building was erected in 1887, but a century of wear and tear had left it in
need of major renovations. The building re-opened in 2004 as “The
Commons”, with retail and office space on the first floor and two rental units
upstairs.
This
project has been recognized statewide and nationally as a successful example of
community initiated development. The Women of The Commons have spoken at
a number of events including the Maine Downtown Center’s Annual Conferences in
2004 and 2006, and at the National Main Street Conference in 2007. As a
result of this successful venture, The Women have already undertaken a second
project – the revitalization of the 1907-built Continental Can factory.
Plans call for a multi-use facility renovated to green building
standards. For more information, please visit http://www.thecommonseastport.com/
