Main Street Maine Communities
Main Street Maine
communities are selected through a statewide competitive process based on
specific criteria related to an applicant community’s willingness and ability to
revitalize their downtowns. Selected Main Street Maine communities enter into a
partnership with the Maine Downtown Center for three years. Designated
communities receive thousands of dollars worth of intensive training and
technical assistance based on the National Main Street Center’s Main Street
Approach to downtown revitalization from the Maine Downtown Center. In return, Main Street Maine communities pledge to implement a locally supported
sustainable downtown revitalization program, including raising funds to hire a
downtown manager for three years.
Gardiner, Saco, Waterville and Bath were designated as Main Street Maine communities in 2001; Eastport and Norway received designation in 2002; Skowhegan and Van Buren were designated in 2005; and in 2006 Biddeford was designated.
